Vice President Pence said he was never part of discussions to remove President Trump from office and would take a lie-detector test "in a heartbeat" to prove that he was not the author of last week's anonymous New York Times op-ed, who claimed to be part of a resistance movement within the Trump administration. The op-ed writer claimed to be part of a "resistance" movement within the Trump administration that was working quietly behind the scenes to thwart the president's most risky impulses.

"If they have published an anonymous editorial that says that they are misrepresenting themselves, that they are essentially living a lie within this administration, and trying to frustrate and subvert the agenda of the president was elected to advance, that's an important issue", Pence said.

Both Pence and Kellyanne Conway, a counselor to Trump, pushed back during separate television appearances Sunday on the portrayals of Trump as anything but a thoughtful leader.

Trump, meanwhile, has denounced the Times opinion piece as "gutless" and its publication as a "disgrace" bordering on treason.

Vice-president Mike Pence says he is "100% confident" that none of his staff were behind an anonymous article that described Donald Trump as "amoral" and "erratic".

While Pence didn't specify if he had specifically asked members of his staff if they penned the piece, he said he didn't think he had to. I know their character.

Many senior officials in the Trump administration, including a majority of Cabinet members, have also denied being the author.

"I would agree to take it in a heartbeat and would submit to any review the administration wanted to do", he said in a taped interview on Fox News Sunday.

"I know them", he explained.

He restated that he thinks the essay writer should do the "honorable thing and resign". "Anybody who would do this, you don't know what else they're saying".

Mr Trump has not commented on whether he would go that far, but Mr Pence said he would not refuse. CBS host Margaret Brennan asked Pence.

In recent days, Trump has repeatedly said that he believes Attorney General Jeff Sessions should launch an investigation to find out who the author of the piece was, citing national security grounds.

Speaking to CBS's Face the Nation in an interview to be broadcast in full on Sunday, Pence also denied that White House officials had discussed invoking the 25th amendment and removing Trump from power.
