Russell Knight | 16 September, 2018, 15:09

"It snapped in half, my knee-jerk reaction was to swallow, and I found the other half of the needle in the strawberry", he said.

Needles have been found in strawberries sold in Woolworths stores.

ACT chief health officer Dr Paul Kelly said no contaminated Berry Liscious or Berry Obsession strawberries had been reported in the territory, but encouraged caution.

NSW Police are also urging anyone who has purchased contaminated product to take the punnet to their local police station immediately for triage and forensic examination.

Queensland Acting Chief Superintendent Terry Lawrence said on September 12 that the police were in contact with the farm operators and Woolworths representatives, and that they believed that the offender contaminated the stock intentionally.

Police hunting for a culprit who put sewing needles in strawberries are investigating whether a disgruntled worker could be to blame.

The needle was found in a strawberry punnet purchased at Coles Gatton today.

Detective Acting Chief Superintendent Terry Lawrence told media that while the Strawberry Growers Association said they believed that disgruntled ex-employee may be responsible for the needles, police are "not agreeing with that at all at this point in time".

Industry sources said the same strawberries were sold in NSW, sparking widespread safety fears.

"Yesterday, I said anyone that had bought those products since the start of last week needed to dispose of them", Dr Jeanette Young said on Thursday.

"People can go back and buy the strawberries they normally buy, from anywhere", she said.

Australians have been warned to cut fresh strawberries before biting into them after several people found sewing needles hidden inside the fruit.

"If you have Donnybrook strawberries at home, or are unsure of the brand, you should return them to the store or throw them away".

The initial brands affected by the contamination, Berry Licious and Berry Obsession, have already been removed from sale and are no longer in market. "We're keeping a very open mind as to where this may have occurred somewhere between the actual growing of the strawberry through to the completion of the production line and going even further through to distribution and going on to the shelves".

Angela told The Observer she was cutting the fruit for her daughter Koby-Rose on Tuesday morning when her knife hit metal. "It makes it hard because you might need to dispose of them earlier, but just cut them up for safety's sake".

"As the products have yet to be forensically examined, it is unknown if the contamination is related to the original Queensland incident or a copycat", NSW Police said in a statement late Friday.

"I said I need you to stop him from eating the strawberries".

Anyone with information that could assist the police investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
