Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge set a new world record for the marathon in Berlin on Sunday, shaving more than a minute off the previous best. That's when Australian Dennis Clayton took 2:25 off the record and became the first person to run under 2:10:00 for the distance in 1967. Instead it transpired that the pacemakers were holding him back.

"I had a great belief that I would run a World record but I dint know I would run 2:01".

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge stands in front of a clock displaying his time after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record with 2h01m39s on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

Kipchoge won on Sunday by a ridiculous 4:44, as no other man broke 2:06.

With Boit doing a stellar job of maintaining his solitary charge at the front, the pair passed through 20km in 57:56 and the halfway mark at 61:06 - nearly on par with the target of 61 minutes for the first half.

While Kipchoge clearly stole the show in Berlin, the depth of the women's race is certainly noteworthy.

Boosted after leaving Boit, he surged, running the 27th kilometre in just 2:51 - seven seconds faster than necessary.

After the race, Kipchoge, who also won in 2016 and 2017, said: "I lack words to describe this day".

Death toll rise to 13, Florence continues to wreak havoc in US
The storm will dump rain in the Carolinas through the weekend. "I can not overstate it: flood waters are rising". The gray ash left behind when coal is burned contains toxic heavy metals, including arsenic, lead and mercury.

But, at the 30km mark Kipchoge was 52 seconds ahead of WR pace and the magic 2:02:57 mark was within sight again.

Following his superb performance, the 33-year-old said that he would defend his title in 2019 hoping to break his current record.

Kipchoge now adds the official world record to his extensive list of achievements. It was just a matter of how much time he could take off Kimetto's record. His unofficial time was 2 hours, 1 minute and 40 seconds, but that later was lowered by one second.

The previous track record was set by Mizuki Noguchi of Japan 13 years ago.

Kipchoge has won 11 out of the 12 marathons he has raced in, including at the Olympics.

Kenya's Edna Kiplagat finished fourth in a time of 2:21:18 and made history of her own by becoming the first female athlete to run in all major marathons and finishing within the top six in all.

Kipchoge, who past year took part in the Nike Breaking Two project, where he ran two hours and 25 seconds with the aid of "illegal" in and out pacemakers, started off at a sizzling pace.
