The Cairo Criminal Court sentenced 75 former Muslim Brotherhood (MB) members to death on Saturday over the Rabaa Al Adaweya dispersal, which resulted in the deaths of hundreds.

Those who were sentenced in the mass trial were accused of security-related offences including incitement to violence, murder and organising illegal protests.

While those sentenced to death by hanging, include senior Brotherhood leaders Essam al-Erian, Mohamed Beltagi and prominent Islamist preacher Safwat Higazi.

The court also sentenced the Muslim Brotherhood's supreme leader, Mohammed Badie, and 46 others to life imprisonment. Osama Morsi, the son of the detained Mohamed Morsi and 21 others were jailed for 10 years.

Mahmoud Abu Zaid, a photojournalist known as Shawkan, whose detention has been criticised by rights groups at home and overseas, received five years in prison.

Verdicts were delivered today for more than 700 defendants, including leading figures from Mr Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party, in a case that Amnesty International described as "disgraceful".

The protest had followed weeks of protests in 2013 against the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi by the military - led at the time by Egypt's current president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Shawkan should therefore be able to leave prison "within a few days", his lawyer Karim Abdelrady said as he welcomed the verdict.

Since then, the Egyptian government banned the Muslim Brotherhood and declared it a terrorist organisation.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks Egypt 161st out of 180 countries on its press freedom index and says that at least 31 journalists are now detained in the Arab world's most populous nation.

Of the 75 defendants facing the death penalty, 44 were in the dock while the rest were tried in absentia.

The rights watchdog called for a retrial in front of an "impartial court".

Egypt's courts have sentenced hundreds of people, including Morsi and several leaders of his Brotherhood movement, to death or lengthy jail terms after speedy mass trials.

Abu Zeid, also known as Shawkan, has been in jail since August 14, 2013, when he was arrested while covering the sit-in.

"The fact that not a single police officer has been brought to account for the killing of at least 900 people in the Rabaa and Nahda protests shows what a mockery of justice this trial was".
