The escalating violence has dampened hopes of peace talks to end Afghanistan's 17-year conflict but two Taliban officials on Tuesday told Reuters the movement was preparing for another meeting with United States officials following one in July.

The death toll from a suicide bomb attack on a protest gathering in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday has gone up to 68 and with another 165 wounded, the number of dead could rise further, according to a government official.

A suicide bomber on Tuesday targeted a protest in Mohmand Dara district in Nangarhar province.

Protesters from the Nangarhar province's Achin district had gathered to call for the removal of a local police commander.

Khogyani said, a suicide bomber approached the crowded tent where the protesters had gathered and detonated his explosive vest.
