White House press secretary apologizes for false claims on African-American jobs

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered a rare correction and apology after providing false information during a press briefing Tuesday about how many jobs Barack Obama created for blacks during his presidency.

"When President Obama left after eight years in office - eight years in office - he had only created 195,000 jobs for African Americans", Sanders said as she defended Trump against racism charges.

African American job growth during the Obama and Trump presidential terms differed little, former Treasury economist Ernie Tedeschi told The Washington Post: "The real bottom line is that the pace of jobs growth hasn't changed dramatically between the two presidents".

Job growth for everyone, including African-Americans, has been somewhat faster in the first two years of Trump's presidency than the first two years of Obama's, but that is because Obama spent his early presidency digging the US economy out of a severe recession. When Obama was president, he created almost 3 million jobs for blacks, about 15 times what Sanders claimed.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that rate increased to 16.8 in March 2010 but fell to 7.8 percent by Obama's last month in office in January 2017.

The White House Council of Economic Advisers took responsibility for the flub and apologized to Sanders for an "earlier miscommunication".

Sanders later followed with a statement of her own.

They then provided actual figures for the 20-month period following Obama's first and second election to Trump's election.

Most economist tend to believe that a president's ability to shift employment trends is actually quite stifled.

"This is a President who is fighting for all Americans, who is putting policies in place that help all Americans, particularly African-Americans". The economy he presided over is the same one that has allowed Trump to enjoy steady job growth. "I'm sorry for the mistake, but no apologies for the 700,000 jobs for African Americans created under President Trump", Mrs. Sanders tweeted to her 3.18 million followers.

Sanders' original answer came in response to questions about Trump's use of a racial slur.
