Vaping Shuts Off Immune-Fighting Cells in the Lungs, Lab Study Finds

Researchers at the University of Birmingham now have proof that the vapour inhaled from e-cigarettes can cause harm to the immune cells of the respiratory system. It also impaired the function of certain cells that remove bad things like dust, bacteria and allergens called alveolar macrophages. "But if you vape for 20 or 30 years and this can cause COPD, then that's something we need to know about".

"I don't believe e-cigarettes are more harmful than ordinary cigarettes, but we should have a cautious skepticism that they are as safe as we are being led to believe", Thickett said.

E-cigarettes may be more harmful to your health than was previously thought, a new study published Monday revealed. A large number of e-cigarette companies are being bought up by tobacco companies and there's certainly an agenda to portray e-cigarettes as safe.

They extracted immune cells from lung tissue samples provided by eight non-smokers who had never suffered from asthma or COPD and exposed them to varying levels of e-cigarette fluid and condensed vapour.

The researches then added that these effects were similar to the effects caused by regular cigarettes and people with chronic lung disease.

A third of the cells were exposed to plain e-cigarette fluid, a third to different strengths of the artificially vaped condensate with and without nicotine, and a third to nothing for 24 hours, according to a press release.

The US Surgeon General has however issued warnings that use of e-cigarettes among the young can lead to several problems such as nicotine addiction, mood swings and impairment of brain development.

The inhalant vapor of the electronic cigarette, according to the new study, destroys cells of the immune system, making it hard for the lungs to get rid of potentially unsafe micro-organisms and infections.

The authors state that further research is actually needed to completely assess the effects, but this work shows that the idea that e-cigarettes are completely safe is questionable.

Initially public health experts were not that concerned about e-cigarettes because they were being marketed as a way to help smokers quit, Blaha said.

Other experts also suggest looking at the bigger picture: Most e-cigarette users are current or former smokers, so the potential damage needs to be in comparison to regular cigarettes.

Vaping or smoking e-cigarettes has been found to be a harmful practice.

This week the government's Science and Technology committee would release a report on the safety of e-cigarette smoke.
