Almost 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in the United States in 2017, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A press release from the CDC says this data surpassed the previous record set in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases and marked the fourth consecutive year of sharp increases in these sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
Primary and secondary syphilis diagnoses increased 76 percent (from 17,375 to 30,644 cases).
"We expect gonorrhea will eventually wear down our last highly effective antibiotic, and additional treatment options are urgently needed", Gail Bolan, director of CDC's Division of STD Prevention, said.
All can be cured with antibiotics but if left untreated can lead to infertility and serious complications.
"Usually there are ebbs and flows, but this sustained increase is very concerning".
The data, which was presented at the 2018 STD Prevention Conference, found a 67 percent increase in gonorrhea diagnoses, which officials sounded alarm over due to the growing threat of untreatable strains. "We haven't seen anything like this for two decades".
Sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis soared to new record highs in the United States past year, public health officials said Tuesday.
The diseases are soaring among heterosexual men along with pregnant women and their babies, according to the report.
"People can find partners and they don't even need to know their names".
