Perseid meteor shower: how to see shooting stars this weekend

This year's show is expected to be especially stunning, in part, because the moon will be a thin crescent and will set early, leaving a dark night sky for stargazing, reported Space.com, a Live Science sister site.

The Perseids will light up the sky with dozens of meteors an hour on August 11 to 13, setting up a spectacular show for stargazers. What's more, the illuminating display is one of year's brightest, too.

The annual show is the result of Earth's proximity to the "gritty" debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, Boyle said in a release.

People can view the meteors streaming across the sky anywhere away from downtown Lawrence.

Perseids meteor shower 2018: When is it?

This year's shower will be putting on its best display for those in Europe, but as it's peak last so long, from the 11th to 12th, it should also put on a spectacular display for the USA and elsewhere in the northern hemisphere.

And don't forget to grab your camera before you head out.

Liverpool boss Klopp: Big spending always going to happen
Liverpool's England duo Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold only returned to training this week, alongside Lovren, but are pushing for a start.

Since the Perseids always show up in August, they often coincide with warm summer nights - flawless weather for viewing if you can avoid rain or clouds and get to a dark spot.

"So every year when the Earth orbits the sun and passes through that debris field you get this stream of particles that pass into the atmosphere and gives you this meteor shower", Twarog said. The number will then start to diminish, though higher-than-average meteor activity associated with the Perseids should be visible through August 24.

The Perseid meteor shower has been taking place since mid-July, but will hit its peak this coming weekend.

Patience is key. It can take up to 45 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark for optimal viewing. However, observers in the mid-Southern Hemisphere will still have a chance of seeing some shooting stars if they look toward the northeast horizon.

The Perseids are so-called because the point from which they appear, known as the radiant, lies in the constellation of Perseus.

The best viewing will be in a dark location without any light pollution. The Perseids are best seen after 11 PM, away from city lights, and while looking at the northeastern sky.
