The findings are the latest to suggest activity in the North's nuclear and missile facilities despite arms negotiations with the U.S. and a recent summit between President Donald Trump and tyrant Kim Jong-un.

The U.S. -led United Nations Command planned a formal repatriation ceremony Wednesday at Osan, where the remains have been examined and catalogued by DPAA.

The Pentagon said it's "absolutely" considering sending USA personnel to North Korea to search for more missing Americans.

Dozens of American, South Korean and other soldiers and officials from United Nations countries that fought in the Korean War conducted a ceremony with full military honors before the remains were loaded into military transport aircraft for the flight to Hawaii on Wednesday. But there is a broad consensus among USA intelligence agencies that Kangson is one of at least two secret enrichment plants. The DPAA has what it calls family reference samples, including DNA, for more than 90 percent of the missing servicemembers.

"We don't know who's in those boxes", he said. There's a whole lot of us.

"This is an global effort to bring closure", Mattis said.

The Pentagon estimates that of the approximately 7,700 U.S. MIAs from the Korean War, about 5,300 are unaccounted for on North Korean soil.

Richard Downes, whose father, Air Force Lt. Hal Downes, is among the Korean War missing, says this turnover of remains, having drawn worldwide attention, has the potential to put the USA back on track to finding and eventually identifying many more.

"There is no reason to doubt that they do relate to Korean War losses", Byrd added. "That's why we go through all the forensics".

"We see them going to work, just as before", said one USA official, who, like the others, spoke on the condition of anonymity in discussing sensitive intelligence. The two sides remain technically at war because a peace treaty was never signed.

Independent missile experts also told The Washington Post that they have found evidence that is consistent with us agency findings and that there is ongoing activity.

"Just over 1,000 men are unrecovered" from the so-called Demilitarized Zone and nearby buffer zones, according to DPAA. The remains were delivered from the North to South Korea last Friday, and will make their way from Osan to Hawaii early Wednesday.

The report is the latest indication that Kim continues to build nuclear weapons, despite Trump declaring North Korea was "no longer a nuclear threat" after the leaders' June 12 summit in Singapore.

USA spy satellites have detected renewed activity at the North Korean factory that produced the country's first intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching the United States, a senior US official said on Monday, in the midst of talks to compel Pyongyang to give up its nuclear arms. Since then, the North has made few tangible moves that would signal it intends to relinquish its nuclear weapons - with the exception of the ongoing dismantlement of the Sohae missile engine test-stand, which some experts say is both unneeded by the regime and reversible.

But some independent analysts think the Trump administration has misread Kim's intentions, interpreting his commitment to eventual denuclearization as a promise to immediately surrender the country's nuclear arsenal and dismantle its weapons factories.
