India will put man in space for seven days: ISRO Chairman India will put man in space for seven days: ISRO Chairman

We are already on the job and we have completed many technologies like crew module and escape systems.

His remarks came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in his Independence Day address that India will attempt a manned mission into space by 2022 on board "Gaganyaan".

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had proposed India's human space flight programme - Vyom - almost a decade ago.

The conservative prime minister said that India would be only the fourth country - after Russian Federation, the United States and China - to launch its own manned space mission.

The country's space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation, told reporters earlier this week that its second spacecraft, the Chandrayaan 2, which had been scheduled to depart in October, will take place next year instead, with a launch window from January to March, reports Nature.

The ISRO is yet to finalise the exact timeline of tests before a manned mission can take off, as it plans to have two unmanned test flights onboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mk 3.

A capsule that will carry astronauts has already been tested.

ISRO chairman claimed that the project had already been underway but with PM Modi making a promise to the nation, they will be prioritising it and delivering what PM Modi had promised in due time.

If successful, India would be the fourth nation to achieve that feat. In 1984, India's first astronaut Wing Commander (retd.) Rakesh Sharma orbited Earth as part of a Soviet mission.

Kalpana Chawla became first woman of Indian origin to fly into space. Chawla was one of the seven crew members who had died in the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia, during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere in 2003. "Necessary improvement in launch systems and satellite technologies is called for", he said.

K Radhakrishnan, former ISRO chairman under whose leadership the Mangalyaan mission was launched in 2013, termed the announcement of Gaganyaan mission a "turning point" for the ISRO.

However of late, it has launched missions like Chandrayaan-1 (moon mission) and Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission) that has aroused tremendous interest among people.

The costs for a manned space flight are still to be worked out but, he said, Isro believes the project will cost less than Rs 10,000 crore.
