Just before lunchtime on Tuesday, thieves entered a cathedral in Sweden, stole two royal crowns and an orb before jumping into a small speedboat and making their escape.

Two crowns and a jewelled orb were stolen from the Strangnas Cathedral in the western part of Stockholm on Tuesday morning (July 31).

While some funeral regalia are kept in the cathedrals of Strangnas, Uppsala and Vasteras, Sweden's crown jewels are in vaults of the treasury under the Royal Castle in Stockholm.

Eyewitness Tom Rowsell told NBC News' Swedish partner Aftonbladet that he saw two men jump into a "little white boat".

The thieves have not yet been captured.

The motorboat is described as small and open, though its color is now unclear.

The gold crowns belonged to King Charles IX and Queen Christina and date back to the early 1600s.

The thieves, who have not been identified, and the jewels are being sought internationally via Interpol, Swedish police spokesman Stefan Dangardt said, noting the objects were a "national treasure" and would likely be "very hard to sell". The two men smashed the protective cases, grabbed the loot, and fled towards the shore of a nearby lake.

Catharina Fröjd, who works at Strängnäs cathedral, called the theft "an enormous loss in cultural value and economic value".

The police have issued vague descriptions of the thieves: one is said to be skinny and wearing a light beige jacket with dark long trousers.

"I knew immediately that they were burglars because of the way they were behaving".

"'It's 1-0 to them right now", a police spokesperson said, according to The Express.

The stolen items are "impossible to sell" due to their uniqueness and high visibility, Maria Ellior of the Swedish police's National Operations Department told the Swedish news agency TT.

"What usually happens with this type of object is that they are recovered sooner or later, because there are very few people who are prepared to handle such items", Agnevik said.
