Bulls and Magic Among Teams to Play Games in Mexico Next Season

Shannon Reynolds | 10 August, 2018, 22:13

Chicago will face the Orlando Magic in Mexico City on December 13, the league announced Tuesday, as part of the Mexico City Games 2018, which also features the Magic playing the Jazz two nights later at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel notes that the DeVos family - owners of the Magic franchise and co-founders of Amway - had a hand in Orlando's decision to play in Mexico City.

The contest will be held at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City as part of the NBA Mexico City Games 2018.

The Jazz last played in a preseason game at Mexico City versus Dallas on October 5, 2003, in front of a sellout crowd of 20,092 fans.

The League has played games in England and Japan and Brazil.

Both games will be broadcast on ESPN and NBA League Pass International. It will mark the Magic's first games in Mexico City since the 2013 season. I wonder how the Magic got picked to surrender two home games. It certainly helps in relation to the promotion of our ownership's interests in Amway, and that's certainly the case with Mexico City as Mexico is a growing market for the Amway Corporation.

The league has also agreed to a multiyear partnership with Zignia Live to play future games over the next several years in Mexico.

The Magic and the National Basketball Association should release the rest of the schedule in the coming weeks. The NBA has established a major global presence with games and programming in 215 countries and territories in 50 languages, and merchandise for sale in more than 125,000 stores in 100 countries on six continents. Both of the Brooklyn Nets' games in Mexico City previous year against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Miami Heat aired on ESPN. The Magic will face the Chicago Bulls on December 13 and Utah Jazz on December 15. The NBA has created one of the largest social media communities in the world, with 1.5 billion likes and followers globally across all league, team, and player platforms.
