Health workers will begin administering vaccinations Wednesday to combat a new Ebola outbreak that has already claimed dozens of lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country's health ministry said.

As with the outbreak in western Congo, health officials plan to deploy a vaccine manufactured by Merck that they have credited with helping disrupt the spread of the virus after it reached a river port city with transport links to the capital Kinshasa.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said the "deterioration of the security situation" in affected area was expected to hinder the response to the outbreak.

He cited new results of genetic analysis that confirm the strain of Ebola in the new outbreak is the Zaire strain, one for which the vaccine can be used. "Twelve teams of vaccinators will be deployed in the different affected zones".

Tarik Jasarevic from the World Health Organization explains why it is so hard to deal with the latest outbreak.

Oly Ilunga Kalenga says in a statement that at least four Ebola deaths are confirmed.

Health experts have identified at least 966 contacts who are now under surveillance.
