People everywhere are celebrating her life and her contributions to music and beyond.

A professional singer and accomplished pianist by her late teens, a superstar by her mid-20s, Franklin had long ago settled any arguments over who was the greatest popular vocalist of her time.

"She was a rose that grew tall in a garden of weeds".

She maintained her commitment to civil rights throughout her life and famously sang at President Obama's inauguration in 2009. Franklin, who has been dubbed and known as the "Queen of Soul", is known for many classics such as "I Say a Little Prayer" as well as the timeless, powerful "Respect".

The NAACP, the country's largest civil rights organization, presented Franklin with an award in 2008 for her role in advancing awareness of racial and social issues.
