She signed on with Columbia Records and, in a few years, she would have her first Top Forty hit on American Radio.

Earlier this year, she canceled a pair of performances, including at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, on doctor's orders, according to Rolling Stone.

It is possibly why Barack Obama labelled her music as embodying the connection between African-American culture and the experiences felt by many throughout USA history.

"I love marriage-love the institution", she told Wendy Williamsin a 2011 interview, confirming that she still spoke to Turman.

In a career spanning over 50 years, Franklin has sold over 75m records with soul anthems including Respect, Think, I Say A Little Prayer and (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

She also performed at the inaugurations of three presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.

Franklin, who sang with matchless style on such classics as "Think, ' "I Say a Little Prayer" and her signature song, "Respect", announced her retirement from touring past year".

Franklin was born in Memphis, Tenn., on March 25, 1942. In 1956, she released her first album Songs of Faith, recorded at her father's church, New Bethel Baptist Church. "And she just sounds so damn good".

There, Aretha Franklin began singing solos at age 10, soon after her mother, an accomplished piano player and vocalist, died. Her father was a popular preacher and she grew up with gospel greats like Albertina Walker and Mahalia Jackson visiting her home.

Throughout her later career, Franklin suffered accusations she was a diva to deal with.

The young Franklin would accompany her father on the road as he and other singers toured churches - moves that eventually led to her releasing gospel records herself. By the late '60s, Aretha became one of the biggest worldwide recording artists of her time, putting out ten top ten hits in a roughly 18-month span between early 1967 and late 1968. I will be recording, but this will be my past year in concert.

By 1979, she had already been given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and went on to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

Aretha Franklin, the long-reigning Queen of Soul, died on Thursday morning at age 76 from advance pancreatic cancer. Her popularity stayed strong with "Freeway Of Love", and the George Michael duet "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)".

- Her voice is unparalleled.
