The grounds at Wimbledon were sparsely populated as England attempted to reach their first World Cup final since 1966.

The Centre Court showpiece is now slated for 2 p.m. GMT on Sunday, meaning it would be highly likely to clash with the World Cup final, kicking off at 4 p.m.

Wimbledon fans on Centre Court will be allowed to use phones and tablets to follow the World Cup final, the head of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has said.

"It is purely our decision to stay at 2pm".

But Wimbledon chief executive Richard Lewis has refused to change the championship's stance and said attending spectators were expecting to see tennis.

However, he did offer a way that fans would be able to watch the game if they wanted to; albeit not quite with the same communal atmosphere as a big screen showing.

Lewis said he had not asked Fifa, football's world governing body, at any stage to consider moving the World Cup final to a different time.

Switzerland´s Roger Federer returns to France´s Adrian Mannarino in their men´s singles fourth round match at Wimbledon, July 9, 2018.

With a smile on his face, he told a post-match press conference: "I'm more concerned the World Cup final will have issues because the Wimbledon final is going on". "They'll hear every point, wow, love-15, 15-30", he said.

Fans on the grounds of the All-England Club watch the World Cup quarterfinal between England and Sweden on their cellphones.

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any goal other than tennis.

"We had superb tennis going on and we were benefiting from modern technology where people were able to follow the football and enjoy it, without disturbing other people", he told the paper.

"We didn't have one single complaint of anybody here feeling that the football interfered with their enjoyment of Wimbledon".

"I am sure the same again will happen on Wednesday - and hopefully on Sunday".

Lewis is quoted in the Guardian saying: "People get Wimbledon, and we get the balance right".

Lewis has become exasperated by stories that the All England Club has been indifferent to the national wave of affection which has engulfed Gareth Southgate´s football team.

"We've installed public WiFi, very strong WiFi signal".
