Wimbledon 2018 -- No. 1 Simona Halep loses in third round at Wimbledon

Shannon Reynolds | 08 July, 2018, 08:26

The Romanian world number one did have a match point but never got to grips with the 32-year-old Hsieh on a baking Court One and lost the last five games as her opponent clawed her way back from 2-5 down in the decider.

World number one and French Open champion Simona Halep was knocked out of Wimbledon today, losing to Taiwan's Hsieh Su-Wei 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the third round as the All England Club seeds' carnage claimed another victim.

Defeat for the French Open champion means only one of the top 10 seeds in the women's singles have reached the last 16 - Czech seventh seed Karolina Pliskova.

It also further boosted Serena Williams's chances of becoming an eight-time Wimbledon champion.

It's the first time in the Open era that none of the top five women's seeds have made the last 16 of a Slam.

Hsieh will meet either Dominika Cibulkova or Elise Mertens in the fourth round.

"I had 5-2 in the third set. I think because I was exhausted, because I'm exhausted, I couldn't stay focused for every ball", Halep said.

A lengthy first game in which Halep finally broke when Hsieh sent a forehand long set the tone in the early stages where holding serve proved hard.

"A positive match against a player with a lot of energy, some tough moments", the world No.1 told the BBC.

But the Serb managed to refocus after a lengthy complaint to umpire Jake Garner.

"It was an important point".

For the first time in Wimbledon history, none of the top five women's seeds reached the round of 16.

The former US Open victor, who made the semi-finals in 2013, next faces unseeded Gilles Simon of France.

Other early winners on Saturday included Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck who followed her upset of defending champion Garbine Muguruza by beating Anett Kontaveit, the 28th seeded Estonian, 6-2, 6-3.

Belinda Bencic sent home another seeded player in Carla Suarez Navarro with a 6-1 7-6 (7-3) victory to continue her resurgence after injury travails.
