Why This Month's Blood Moon Is One That You Can't Miss

Sandra Phillips | 03 July, 2018, 16:22

The "blood moon" is the longest total lunar eclipse of this century when the moon will be seen coloured in a reddish hue.

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colourful appearance from bright orange to blood red and more rarely dark brown to very dark gray, depending upon the part of the Earth's shadow it would be passing through.

"Whenever, the Sun, Earth and Moon come in a ideal straight line, as the Sun's rays falls on the Earth, the Earth's shadow falls onto a patch of space, and only when, the Moon enters that patch of shadow, we see a lunar eclipse", he said. This means that the Earth will obstruct direct sunlight from reaching the satellite's surface. The moon appears 75 times larger, at 1,800 arc seconds, by comparison.

Will moon actually turn red during Blood Moon?

Why red, you might ask? During the summer months, Earth also swings out to its furthest distance from the sun, allowing it to cast a particularly long shadow. Though concealed by the sun, the moon is still flecked with a few stray particles of light filtered through Earth's atmosphere. The air around Earth scatters more of the short-wave light, like green and blue, than the longer wavelength light, which is on the red end of the spectrum. Including phases where the moon is partially masked, the event will last almost four hours total.

Dubai is all set to witness a total lunar eclipse on the night of July 27, an observatory in Dubai announced. "That is why a full moon at or near lunar apogee adds to the duration of a total lunar eclipse", Mr Duari said.

Eerie as it may be, the moon's face appears rouged for the same reason the sky looks blue to our eyes.

How can I see it?

According to the Dubai Astronomy Group, the eclipse will last for about one hour and 43 minutes, the longest in the century, and will also feature a "blood moon". As per Begley, the upcoming lunar eclipse will mark the final page in the history of humanity, and he made it clear that these predictions are being derived after thoroughly analyzing biblical prophecies.

The eclipse will be completely visible over Eastern Africa and Central Asia, and will be partially seen over Western Africa, Eastern Asia, South America, Europe, and Australia. Views in Africa, the Middle East, southern Asia, and the Indian Ocean region will have the best views!
