Last week, an upcoming Whitney Houston documentary surprised the family by revealing information about incidents of sexual assault against Whitney and her brother as children. Houston's half-brother, Gary Garland-Houston, alleges Dee Dee molested him and Whitney when he was aged between seven and nine, claims corroborated by Whitney's assistant, who said the singer told her she was "molested at a young age" by a woman.

The abuse allegedly occurred when Houston was a young girl.

Whitney Houston's mother says allegations that her superstar daughter and her son were molested by her niece, Dee Dee Warwick, are "unfathomable".

"A charge which neither Whitney nor Dee Dee is here to deny' ... IF she was molested I do not believe she would have wanted it to be revealed for the first time to thousands, maybe millions of people in a film". Many were shocked to learn about the allegations, especially considering they were against Dee Dee Warwick, Cissy Houston's niece.

The accusations in question come near the end of Macdonald's documentary after the Oscar-winning filmmaker delves deep into Whitney's demons - at times with commentary from Cissy and other members of Whitney's family and platonic personal circle, including ex-husband Bobby Brown and estate executor and sister-in-law Pat Houston.

"I was close to Whitney, she confided in me and I struggled tremendously deciding whether to share this secret or keep to myself", Jones told People in her own statement. "But it was a situation I didn't understand".

Dee Dee, who was also a soul singer, died in October 2008, a few years before Whitney was tragically found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 11, 2012. "I deeply love and respect Dionne, Cissy and their entire families, and my intention was never to embarrass anyone in the family, but rather to bring to light that Whitney was subjected to something painful and troubling as a child".

The Whitney documentary premiered in theaters on July 6.
