The U.S. Embassy in London issued an alert on Tuesday to Americans in the British capital, warning them to keep a low profile during President Donald Trump's visit later this week in case protests against him turn violent.

Trump is set to visit the United Kingdom later this week after he attends a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and before a highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has defended his decision to approve permits for a six-metre high blimp of US President Donald Trump dressed like a baby.

On Friday he will visit PM Theresa May at Chequers, set to be followed by a meeting with Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle.

"Several of the events are expected to attract large crowds and there will be road closures in connection with those events", the embassy said.

The embassy advised Americans in the country to be aware of their surroundings, "keep a low profile", exercise caution if large gatherings are present, and monitor local media reports for updates.
