We are not closer to a no deal Brexit, says May

We are not closer to a no deal Brexit, says May We are not closer to a no deal Brexit, says May

Johnson resigned from his post last week over May's plan to maintain European Union regulations after Brexit.

Johnson paid tribute to Theresa May for "her courage and her resilience".

The BBC's chief political correspondent Vicki Young said Johnson's friends were insisting he was not trying to emulate Sir Geoffrey Howe, whose caustic resignation speech in 1990 is widely seen as having paved the way for Margaret Thatcher's downfall weeks later.

"At absolutely no point because Brexit continues to mean Brexit", May replied.

"We have a lot of work to do with our teams", said Mr Barnier as he welcomed Mr Raab to European Union headquarters, highlighting there were only 13 weeks left before an October target for a full deal.

Johnson, who is seen as a potential challenger to May, warned that her plan would leave Britain in "miserable permanent limbo" and was "Brexit in name only".

Farage described it as a well delivered speech but added: "it is hopeless to expect Mrs May to deliver on any of it".

Britain says this is one-sided and wants changes to make it more predictable and transparent. "But he said that since then, 'a fog of self-doubt has descended". May also said talks had already started with Brussels based on the proposal set down in a white paper policy document last week after her divided government had thrashed out a deal at her Chequers country residence.

"The result of accepting the EU's rulebooks ... is that we have much less scope to do free trade deals", he said.

He also emphasised that checks away from the Irish border and technical solutions were possible.

Guardiola: It would've been a mistake for Jorginho to join City
The Ukraine worldwide made 16 Premier League appearances last summer and was expected to be left out of City's pre-season tour squad.

Johnson warned against making the "the fatal mistake of underestimating the intelligence of the public" by saying one thing to the European Union and pretending to do another thing to the public.

One government minister said on condition of anonymity that the Conservatives had come to their senses and were backing her Brexit plan.

Ensuring his party that there is still time in the Brexit negotiations, in a 12-minute statement he said: "It is not too late to save Brexit".

With only a few months to go until October, when negotiators hoped to finalise the withdrawal agreement to give time for ratification both in the British and European parliaments, strategic decisions will have to be made by companies exposed to Brexit urgently.

"I look forward to intensifying, heating up the negotiations and making sure we're in the best position to get the best deal", Raab told reporters, standing next to Barnier. "I've no doubt Jacob Rees-Mogg is running our country".

If 48 such letters are sent a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister amongst Conservative MPs will take place.

The government ultimately won the vote by a margin of six.

After her 90-minute grilling at the liaison committee May faced a meeting of her backbenchers, winning support from a lot of them.

May's biggest competitor since 2016 has been Boris Johnson, a staunch Brexiteer who had spearheaded the "Leave" campaign and felt that he should have taken over as prime minister after Cameron.
