From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

Several thousand people crowded the steps of the National Archives. The Second Continental Congress approved the motion for independence on the second, and Congress approved the actual Declaration on the 4th.

Researchers at Harvard say only 26 of the estimated 200 original copies of the Declaration of Independence exist today. Coincidently, Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826.

According to The Boston Globe, Boston and Philadelphia held "illuminatory" celebrations on July 4, 1777. But few, if any of the Declaration's signatories actually signed the document on that day. Two of them, Thomas Lynch Jr. and Edward Rutledge, were the youngest to sign. Locally, Gallipolis, Middleport, Racine, and Rutland host annual Independence Day fireworks displays.

The romantic idea that colonists celebrated their victory so vigorously that they ended up cracking the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia can not possibly be true, as the official announcement about the Declaration didn't go out until July 8th. One British officer, British Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton was charged to capture the Swamp Fox. The exploits of Francis Marion were made into a movie called "The Patriot", starring Mel Gibson.

"A reminder this Fourth of July: it was eight immigrants who signed the Declaration of Independence". The Revolutionary War went on for years after.

The document was sent by the Continental Congress to MA during the Revolutionary War, according to the State House News Service, and was printed in Mary Katherine Goddard's shop in Baltimore. They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes.
