US President Donald Trump names Brett Kavanaugh for US Supreme Court

Patty Aguilar | 10 July, 2018, 05:33

President Donald Trump said Sunday he was still deliberating his decision on a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy as his self-imposed deadline for an announcement neared amid furious lobbying and frenzied speculation.

The White House said Trump has interviewed four potential picks, all of whom are federal appeals court judges.

The nomination is Trump's second to the nation's highest court, a rare presidential privilege that could seal a key part of Trump's legacy less than two years into his first term.

Kavanaugh once served as a Supreme Court clerk under Kennedy.

His views on abortion are generally unknown, but Kavanaugh was part of a panel that signed an order previous year to prevent an illegal teenage immigrant from getting an abortion.

U.S. Court of Appeals Judges Raymond Kethledge, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman are all in the running as final candidates.

Kavanaugh worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel whose investigation of Clinton helped spur an effort by congressional Republicans in 1998 and 1999 to impeach the Democratic president and remove him from office.

The appointment is seen as crucial because Kennedy was often a swing vote who would sometimes side with the court's four conservative justices and at other times with its liberals.

Trump is hoping to replicate his successful nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch a year ago. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81.

The White House is hoping the Senate moves quickly to confirm Kavanaugh before the midterm elections in November threaten to unfurl the narrow Republican majority in the chamber and nix the precious leverage the GOP holds over some red state Democrats up for reelection in 2018.

The president has spent the days leading up to his announcement discussing the pros and cons of the various options with aides and allies.

In a primetime announcement at the White House, Mr Trump praised his pick as a "brilliant jurist".

Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham of SC and Roy Blunt of Missouri said Sunday that they believe any of the top four contenders could get confirmed by the GOP-majority Senate.

Meanwhile, liberal groups are already calling on two moderate Republican senators - Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska - to reject the nominee. In 2017, Kyl helped prepare former Senator and current Attorney General Jeff Sessions for his confirmation hearing.

But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, while not arguing against Kavanaugh on the merits, has spoken to the White House about the volume of material from the judge's career that would need to be pored through, potentially bogging down the confirmation, according to people familiar with the process.

Blumenthal told Stephanopoulos on "This Week" that the public supports abortion rights.

One Democrat up for re-election, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, announced Monday that he would oppose any nominee from Trump's list of 25 possible candidates, drafted by conservative groups. He called it the "fruit of a corrupt process straight from the D.C. swamp". But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions.
