The Official Gazette said 18,632 people had been fired, including 8,998 police officers, in the emergency decree over suspected links to terror organizations and groups that "act against national security".

In Turkey's Ground Forces, 3,077 officers have been dismissed, while in Navy the number was 1,126 and in Air Force, 1,949 officers and non-commissioned officers have been sacked.

About 1,052 people, including judicial candidates and civil servants were dismissed from the justice ministry.

The state of emergency has been renewed seven times, and the latest period is due to formally end on 19 July.

Turkey declared a state of emergency for the first time on July 20, 2016, following the defeated coup by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) and its US -based leader Fetullah Gulen, which left 251 people martyred and almost 2,200 injured.

Twelve non-governmental organizations, three newspapers and one television station were also shuttered through the 461-page ruling.

However, his new powers enable him to "issue decrees with the force of law" and he "can still declare a similar state of emergency giving authorities powers to restrict basic rights and freedoms when deemed necessary", says Bloomberg. The majority of those fired under the emergency are accused of links to Gulen.

They came less than two weeks before the expected lifting of emergency rule, which was imposed following the attempted coup on July 15, 2016.

Since the coup attempt, some 50,000 people, including dozens of journalists, were arrested in a massive crackdown on alleged Gulen supporters.
