As Donald Trump sat down to dinner with Theresa May, his true feelings about some of Britain's highest ranking politicians was emerging, through an interview he gave The Sun newspaper. Late previous year, May criticized him for retweeting a message by a member of a British far-right group, and the speaker of Britain's parliament has said Trump would not be welcome to address it.
The four-day trip is expected to leave taxpayers with a police and security bill of up to £10million as crowds of protesters take to the streets.
The long-awaited document proposes keeping Britain and the bloc in a free market for goods, with a looser relationship for services.
The timing of the comments could not be worse for May, who is fighting a rebellion among her own MPs over Brexit which has seen Brexit secretary David Davis and foreign secretary Boris Johnsonquit her government.
In an interview with Britain's Sun newspaper published late on Thursday, Trump said May's plans for a business-friendly Brexit would leave it too close to the European Union to allow a new trans-Atlantic trade deal to be struck.
"The EU is in an extremely strong negotiating position and we will end up, quite unbelievably, with an even worse deal than that set out in this white paper". "That is exactly what we will do". "I am just saying I think he would be a great prime minister".
"I don't know if that is what they voted for", he said.
The president also returned to his feud with the London mayor Sadiq Khan, who he previously sparred with via Twitter in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on London in 2017.
Trump noted that recent cabinet resignations in May's administration stemmed from opposition to her plan, which is seen by critics as keeping the government too closely aligned with the European Union - after Brits voted to operate their own independent economy starting eight months from now.
May and Trump are scheduled to hold talks and a joint news conference on Friday.
A trade deal with the United States is one of the main aims of Brexit supporters within Ms May's Conservative Party, who are concerned that she is making too many concessions to the EU.
New Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab has insisted that the much-anticipated Government white paper respects the referendum result while backing business.
At its heart is a proposal for a new Britain-EU "free trade area", with interlinked customs regimes, and identical regulations for industrial goods and agri-food.
Mrs May will host Mr Trump and his wife Melania at a lavish dinner at Blenheim Palace this evening.
It would use technology to apply British tariffs to goods intended for Britain, and the EU's tariffs on those intended for the bloc.
The plan falls short of the current "passporting" rights that enable the country's financial services industry to trade freely with the EU.
His highly-controversial remarks came at the end of a day in which he had already waded deeply into the Brexit row over Theresa May's white paper ahead of his first official visit to Britain as President.
Speaking at conclusion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, Mr Trump gave his views on Britain's withdrawal from the European Union, suggesting it may deliver a softer Brexit against the wishes of the majority of the voting public. "Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future", she said.
This, the UK government believes, would go some way to preserving the open Irish border, as there would be no need for customs checks on the UK-EU border.
And while Britain will no longer fall under the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice - a longtime bugbear of Brexit supporters - British courts will "pay due regard" to European court case law in relevant cases. Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said this proposal would subject the United Kingdom to the "greatest vassalage" seen in over 800 years.
