USA Supreme Court in Washington.

A new report from a conservative news outlet says President Donald Trump is no longer seriously considering Sen.

McGahn was on the lookout for a White House exit; however, chose to stay on and for the nomination process, with the replacement set to be announced on July 9.

A controversial issue overwhelming the debate on the appointment of Kennedy's successor is abortion, which was legalised by a Supreme Court decision in 1973 and may come up again before the court.

President Donald Trump said he had interviewed four candidates on Monday to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and plans to meet with two or three more before he announces his decision on July 9.

The future orientation of the Supreme Court depends on who will succeed Kennedy, a conservative.

Kennedy was 80 when he announced his retirement.

Sanders added that the president met for about 45 minutes with each candidate on Monday at the White House.

Trump is set to announce his nomination next Monday. He has reportedly interviewed four candidates so far.

Trump said he was working from a list of 25 conservative nominees the White House released last November, and the Center has requested disclosures for all of them.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump is seeking a candidate who has "right intellect" and the "right temperament" and will uphold the U.S. Constitution. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a member of the Judiciary Committee, said he didn't think Trump would be overly focused on the Roe ruling. "The Department of Justice is fully engaged to support the nomination and confirmation efforts", Sanders said in a statement Monday.

The Senate is closely divided - 51 Republicans to 49 Democrats. "Susan Collins can not simultaneously say she supports Roe v. Wade and support anybody on that list; that would be quite hypocritical".

Collins said Sunday she had asked Trump to broaden the search. She said she wants a justice who would show a strong respect for precedent - for cases already settled by the court.

"I would not support a nominee who demonstrated hostility to Roe v. Wade because that would mean to me that their judicial philosophy did not include a respect for established decisions, established law", Collins said.

Another Republican, Lisa Murkowski, is also believed to be on the fence. His exit paved the way for Trump to nominate a second justice to the nation's top court.

"I stressed the importance of nominating someone to the Supreme Court who is pragmatic, fair, compassionate, committed to justice and above politics - traits that match Justice Kennedy", Heitkamp said after the meeting.

Now the court has three women justices, all appointed by Democrats.

The Maine senator said she would only back a judge who would show respect for settled law such as the 45-year-old Roe decision, which has always been anathema to conservatives.

That would please Evangelical Christian voters who comprise an important part of Trump's support base.
