Syrian military air defences struck an Israeli warplane and shot down Israeli missiles targeting the T4 air base in Homs province in response to an act of "aggression" on Sunday night, Syrian state media said. Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the United Kingdom -based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the agency that "Iranian and pro-regime fighters" were killed at the base.

Iran immediately vowed revenge and Israel launched "Operation Chess" in an effort to thwart Iranian retaliation with a series of strikes on Iranian targets in Syria.

The Israeli fighter pilot who reportedly carried out the strike succeeded in hitting the target despite having to dodge several S-200 air defense missiles fired by the Syrian military.

"The Zionist regime tries to gain dominance over Syria after ISIL, but resistance forces and military advisers from the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue their presence alongside Syria to counter terrorism, " he said in a meeting with Palestinian Ambassador to Tehran Salah al-Zawawi. Successful Israeli attacks on Syrian bases, however, routinely happen without Israel responding publicly.

Moscow, Tehran and Damascus accused Israel of carrying out those raids.

Untroubled Federer into Wimbledon last 16
When the practice schedule was released yesterday at Wimbledon , the first reaction was to wonder if there had been some mistake. Two double-faults from De Minaur followed by a net error allowed Nadal to serve for the first set, which he took easily .

The air strike followed a fierce exchange in which an Israel Air Force F-16 was hit by a Syrian anti-Aircraft S-300 missile and crashed in Israeli territory during a retaliatory attack that followed the entry of the Iranian drone into Israeli airspace.

But Syrian government officials repeatedly said that the targeted areas are Syrian bases and the soldiers killed were Syrians.

Israel seized a large swathe of the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and later annexed it in 1981, in a move never recognised by the worldwide community.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet this week with Russia's President Vladimir Putin and on the agenda will be - again - the issue of eliminating Iran's presence in Syria.
