In the wake of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement - and in light of Trump's vow to replace him with someone who would overturn Roe v. Wade - all eyes are on Susan Collins, a Republican senator with pro-choice leanings who could help reject an anti-abortion nominee.

Sanders also announced that her deputy Raj Shah will take leave from his role to "oversee communications, strategy and messaging coordination with Capitol Hill allies" surrounding the Supreme Court nomination.

In a series of tweets, Schumer argued that Barrett would support overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision. Trump said a year ago he'd asked for input from the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation on potential Supreme Court justices; Casey called them "hard-right organizations".

Front-runners, according to two people familiar with the process, include D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Brett Kavanaugh, 7th Circuit Judge Amy Coney Barrett, and Thomas Hardiman, who was a finalist to be Trump's first high court appointee as well as a fellow judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals with Trump's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry.

"My colleagues on both sides of the aisle [Democrats and Republicans] know that this could be one of the key votes of their entire career", Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington state said on NBC's Meet the Press program.

The White House also announced Monday that the overall confirmation process would be led by White House counsel Donald McGahn, as it was during the process that led to the successful confirmation a year ago of Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Trump told reporters that the candidates he met with are "outstanding people and they are really incredible people in so many different ways, academically and in every other way".

"Teams of attorneys from the White House Counsel's Office and Department of Justice are working to ensure the president has all the information he needs to choose his nominee", she said.

President Donald Trump has said he will announce his nominee to the court on July 9.

Schumer says while Democrats are outnumbered in the narrowly divided Senate, most senators back abortion rights and the added coverage created by former President Barack Obama's health care law.

"There are not a lot of nominees on that list that many Democrats will support", said Tobias, noting that any candidate backed by the Federalist Society is likely comfortable overturning Roe v. Wade.

He has the backing of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican. Court watchers have been discussing the prospect of a conservative woman on the bench.

"What's important in addition to increasing diversity is how that person would actually interpret law", Chu said. "You could be a woman and not be fair minded".
