In its place, Starbucks will cap cold beverages with a special lid that doesn't require the use of a straw.

The coffee retailer will also begin offering straws made from alternative materials - including paper or compostable plastic - for Frappuccino beverages.

"For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways", Kevin Johnson, president and CEO of Starbucks, said in a statement.

Starbuckshadalready committed $10 million to help develop recyclable, compostable cups for hot drinks.

The design was created by R&D engineer Emily Alexander, who was asked in 2016 to create a new straw-less lid that would showcase the Draft Nitro coffee and cold foam served at a Reserve store in Seattle.

An online petition calling on Starbucks to say goodbye to plastic straws has close to 150,000 signatures.

Vancouver will be the first Canadian city to have the new lids, starting in the fall of this year.

The company said it will make a strawless lid available at 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada for certain drinks.

The announcement comes after Seattle, Starbucks' home market, banned restaurants from using plastic straws and utensils on July 1. Oakland and Berkeley, California, and other cities have also banned the use of disposable straws.

Last month, McDonald's announced that it would start testing plastic-straw alternatives at certain US locations later this year. Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including NY and San Francisco.

"With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines", said Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancy's Trash Free Seas program in a statement.
