Senate leaders trade barbed words over Supreme Court

US President Donald Trump said he will announce his next pick for the Supreme Court US President Donald Trump said he will announce his next pick for the Supreme Court

Both Connecticut's USA senators are urging Democrats to resist the appointment of a new Supreme Court justice until after November's elections.

Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement from the Supreme Court has put the Senate on the cusp of an all-out war over his replacement and thrust an unexpected and hotly contested issue into the spotlight less than five months away from the midterm elections.

Trump said he would make his announcement on July 9, the day before he is scheduled to leave on a presidential trip to Europe. "As I said, I'm looking specifically at two women".

Trump, who is in New Jersey for the weekend, said he plans to interview one or two candidates on Saturday or Sunday before announcing his nominee after the Fourth of July.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said this week "the Senate should follow the rule they set in 2016 not to consider a Supreme Court nominee in an election year", and that failing to follow that principle would be the "height of hypocrisy".

With Kennedy's departure, Republicans have a chance to tip the balance of the court. So long as Republican senators stick together, Trump's nominee will be confirmed. They were the only Democrats to have voted for Trump's first Supreme Court selection, Neil Gorsuch.

The president has said he will choose from a list of 25 names made public by the White House in November.

Potential 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, including Sens.

Sen. Cory Booker pledged a long-term battle to prevent Trump from rushing a conservative judge onto the court, even as he acknowledged it will be hard for Democrats to block any nominee since Republicans control the Senate. "I'm going to try and do something like that, but I don't think I'm going to be so specific".

The Portuguese born manager already re-united with his former player Nemanja Matic after working together at the Stamford Bridge. Barca are hoping to bring in the Anzhi Makhachkala's forward to strengthen their attack ahead of the coming league season.

A key part of the vetting process will likely be reviewing the judge's history of written opinions, said a person with knowledge of Trump's thinking, who noted that the range of Gorsuch's past opinions impressed Trump.

It will be his second Supreme Court pick, one that will give him an opportunity to cement the conservative majority on the nation's high court for years to come.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin says it would be tough to support someone who would revamp the landmark decision.

Other women on the list include Joan Larsen, who serves on the federal appeals court in Cincinnati and previously served as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, and Allison Eid, who serves on the federal appeals court based in Denver and previously served as a Colorado Supreme Court justice. "And probably not. They're all saying, 'Don't do that - you shouldn't do that, ' but I'm putting conservative people on (the court) and I'm very proud of Neil Gorsuch, who has been outstanding".

"We know that President Trump has vowed to appoint a justice that will overturn Roe v. Wade", Cler said.

Steven Law, president of the Senate Leadership Fund, a campaign group aligned with McConnell, said the group is running digital ads in 10 states that Trump won in 2016 where Democratic senators are now up for re-election.

The 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide won't be overturned automatically, nor without a fight.

Pat Martin, the outreach and development director with the Alaska Right to Life Committee, took a similar approach but with a different view: His group would urge Murkowski to uphold her oath to defend the Constitution, he said.
