"It was during President Obama's term in office."White House national security adviser John Bolton on Sunday said he discussed Crimea with Putin during his June 27 visit to Moscow".

"The election meddling issue was definitely something we talked about", Bolton told the CBS "Face the Nation" program.

Meeting likely to provoke criticism for USA leader amid probe into Russian interference in 2016 election.

Mr. Putin has "repeatedly stated and explained that Crimea can not be and will never be on the agenda because it is an inseparable part of Russia", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Trump on Friday implied the US could discuss recognizing Russia's annexation of Crimea during the summit in Helsinki, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Crimea is off the table.

National security adviser John Bolton on Sunday defended President Trump's decision to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki this month as a way to get beyond the "political noise" that has consumed Washington over the ongoing investigation of Russian election interference. "Spain, France, it's unfair what they've done to the United States". "And we hope to have some high-level meetings, perhaps we'll have to see if we'll have a chance to meet with President Putin", Shelby said during a meeting with Governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko. During his historic summit with Kim Jong Un last month, Trump met for about an hour with just the North Korean dictator, joined only by their translators.

Bolton dismissed concerns that Trump has been more willing to criticize USA allies than authoritarian leaders like Putin and North Korea's Kim Jong Un. "And I don't think anybody ought to have a case of the vapors over the discussions we have in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation or the G7 versus discussions with Putin and Kim Jong-un". They fear he may cede too much during their first official summit on July 16 in Helsinki, Finland.

USA intelligence agencies have alleged that Russian hackers had tried to help Trump win the White House, something Russia has flatly denied.

"I'm concerned when the president tweets, you know, 'Russia denies they meddled in our election, ' " Graham said on NBC's "Meet the Press", adding: "When they say they didn't meddle, they're lying". Lindsey Graham (R-SC) contradicted President Donald Trump blaming his predecessor President Barack Obama for allowing Russian Federation to annex Crimea.

"The president wants a strong NATO", Bolton said.
