The remains were strewn over an area covered with thick brush and Fox said it was impossible to know how many people were killed.

Three men were believed to have been eaten alive by the predators sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning after they entered the Sibuya Game Reserve in Kenton-on-Sea to hunt rhinos, Nick Fox, the park's owner, told Newsweek. Investigators found a human head, along with other body parts and limbs, along with three pairs of empty shoes, according to the Daily Mail.

Police were working on determining exactly how many were killed and whether they've struck before.

While Fox said they were sad the poachers were killed, "This sends out a very clear message to any other poachers that you will not always be the victor".

"Clearly, the poachers had walked into a pride of six lions and some, if not all had been killed", he said.

A hunting rifle with a silencer attached and a long axe and wire cutters were recovered at the scene by police.

Police forensics officers were on the scene conducting tests on the remains of the victims, Mr Fox added.

An anti-poaching dog alerted its handler around 4:30 a.m. Monday, but the handler brushed off concerns.

The handler heard a loud commotion coming from the lions but this is not uncommon, Mr Fox said.

The game reserve is one of the most popular in the Eastern Cape with British tourists and is home to the Big Five of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard and is set in 30 square miles.

"They were obviously poachers".

The reserve is still open to guests.

Nick added: 'The lions may have eaten more of them it is hard to tell as the area is very thick with bush and you can not be sure what they have taken off to feed on elsewhere.

This year alone, nine rhinos - all shot with a high-calibre hunting rifle - were killed by poachers on Eastern Cape reserves.Last week, Bella, a rhino at the Kragga Kamma Game Park, was killed just a week after she was dehorned.
