Responding to a report from Britain's Press Association that police have identified "several Russians" as suspects in the March attack, the Russian ambassador to Lo Alexander Yakovenko, said: "We work after all with official data, not with press reports".

For four and a half months, detectives have been scouring Salisbury for clues on who poisoned former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Earlier Thursday, Britain's Press Association cited an unnamed person with knowledge of the investigation as saying that police believe they have identified "several Russians" as the perpetrators of the March attack.

"They (investigators) are sure they (suspects) are Russian", the source added.

In another report Thursday, CNN said the two suspects were identified using facial recognition technology and had fled the country following the March 4 attack, likely on a commercial flight. "It is not known if it is the poisoning of Rowley and Sturgess and the discovery of the bottle that has provided the vital breakthrough".

The news came 10 days after police launched a murder investigation into the death of a British woman who fell ill after being exposed to the same nerve agent used to poison the Skripals.

The Metropolitan Police, who are leading the investigation, and the Home Office both declined to comment.

Their sense of urgency has been compounded by the death of Dawn Sturgess, whose inquest was opened and adjourned today.

In late June it emerged another couple, based near Salisbury, was hospitalised after coming into contact with the nerve agent.

The UK has accused Russian Federation of both attacks, a claim which the Kremlin has consistently denied.

Sturgess's partner, Charlie Rowley, 45, was left fighting for his life after also being contaminated by the chemical weapon. Sergei Skirpal was jailed in Russian Federation for passing state secrets to Britain before he was released in a spy swap and moved to Salisbury.

The inquest heard that a "small glass bottle of fluid" containing Novichok had been found at Mr Rowley's home in Muggleton Road, Amesbury.
