Neymar dazzles and disappoints as Brazil reach World Cup quarters

Two second-half goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino saw Brazil overcome the Mexico challenge in the Round of 16 and progress to the quarter-final, where they will face another title favourites Belgium. Brazil beat Mexico this morning 2-0 in a match that got physical on more than one occasion.

After taking out Germany in a huge opening match win, Mexico took a step back by narrowly defeating South Korea 2-1 in their second match.

As fans around the globe glued to the TV screen in anticipation of who would emerge as the victor, it was a mixed-bag of emotions for all.

Brazil has always been the most successful team in World Cup history, having won five editions of the tournament, one more than both Germany and Italy.

It was Neymar who opened the scoring for Brazil in the 51th minute with a sliding tap-in from Willian's assist, registering his second goal in the World Cup. If the win against Serbia in their last group game makes a point on why Brazil are favourites to win the title, the victory over Mexico on Monday did justice to the fact that Tite's team is the best in the tournament.

Neymar then showed his unselfish side, crossing for Robert Firmino to score in the 88th minute.

Brazil are aiming to emulate the many great teams before them, while putting behind the heartache they suffered at the tournament they hosted four years ago, when Germany destroyed them 7-1 in the semi-finals.

"Unfortunately, and it is a shame for football, we wasted a lot of time because of one player", Juan Carlos Osorio said.

Brazil star Neymar could not resist twisting the knife with some choice comments directed at Mexico after ending El Tri's World Cup hopes on Monday.

With 20 minutes left to play, Mexico's Miguel Layun stepped on Neymar's balky ankle.

It was a choking blow for Mexico, who had been the better side for the opening half an hour, pegging Brazil back and creating several half chances. But not before trying a stamp on Layun himself.

Belgium and Japan face off later in the day, with the victor facing Brazil on Friday.

"Neymar is improving in this aspect", said Tite afterwards of the discipline his player showed, within the match's natural confines at least.

Shocks, mishaps and curiosities have arguably defined this World Cup so far but the tournament needs Neymar.

"It's magnificent how he's playing, especially after three and a half months on the sidelines", PSG teammate Silva said.
