Mexico new president: How AMLO will deal with Trump's aggressive behaviour?

Russell Knight | 03 July, 2018, 13:51

We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States.

It is a major shift in Mexican politics: the PRI and PAN have governed for almost a century, and Lopez Obrador will be the country's first leftist president in recent history when he takes office on 1 December.

Retired Susana Zuniga beamed as she said the country was experiencing a moment similar to the Mexican Revolution a century ago.

In her words: "The people are fed up, that is what brought us to this".

Motorists are cruising up and down the central Paseo de la Reforma honking horns to the tune of "Viva Mexico!" and waving Mexican flags from vehicle windows and moonroofs.

An official quick-count revealed that Lopez Obrador took the lead with 53-53.8% of votes, according to the electoral authority.

Much remains to be determined about how Lopez Obrador's often nebulous campaign proposals will manifest themselves in government.

Anaya acknowledged in a televised speech that "the trend favors Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador".

He added "I recognize his triumph".

Polls had tipped a wide victory for Lopez Obrador, who many investors are expecting will govern from the center.

Not only has Mexico elected its first left-wing president in decades, it's also on track to hand Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador an outright majority in congress.

Speaking late on Sunday night as results trickled in, he vowed to tackle corruption, get a handle on Mexico's violent war on drugs and focus on poverty and inequality. The party also scooped a range of important governorships in Mexico City, Morelos, Chiapas and Tabasco. Rivals have warned he could set the country back with his interventionist economic policy.

There are 80 million registered voters and millions of ballots have been sent across the country along with global observers for the election, which could see an upset for the ruling political class with leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador out in front. The central state of Guanajuato was expected to go to a candidate of the conservative National Action Party. His allies are warning even before Sunday's presidential vote that there better not be any amusing business. Newspaper El Financiero's exit poll gave him 49 percent of the vote to 27 percent for Anaya and 18 percent for Meade.
