President Trump cordially congratulated Mexico's President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador on his impressive win this weekend.

The National Electoral Institute said 98,854 of them mailed ballots by Saturday, more than twice the amount of Mexicans overseas that voted in the last election.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued a statement congratulating Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on his victory in Mexico's presidential election.

Runner-up in the 2006 and 2012 elections, Lopez Obrador pitches himself as the only man capable of cleaning up a political class whose credibility has been ground down by persistent graft, soaring crime levels and years of subpar economic growth.

"This is a historic day, and it will be a memorable night", Lopez Obrador said in a victory speech in Mexico City's Alameda park, as thousands of ecstatic supporters flooded the capital's central district, chanting "Yes we did!" and partying to mariachi music.

"What people want is a change, somebody who will govern differently". His popularity crumbled as his name became tainted by investigations into alleged conflicts-of-interest and embezzlement scandals engulfing top PRI officials.

After a campaign of lofty but vague promises, Mexico is now keen to see what the change Lopez Obrador promises will actually look like.

After 12 years of near-permanent campaigning, Lopez Obrador moderated his message somewhat in both substance and style. Lopez Obrador told voters that he is the person for the job. But he vows to reduce inequality, improve pay and welfare spending and run a tight budget.

A vocal opponent of the government's economic agenda, his criticism has been tempered by business-friendly aides.

But after six years under Pena Nieto, that hasn't been the case.

Jose Antonio Meade, candidate for the ruling PRI, announced shortly after the first exit polls were given, at 8pm in Mexico City, that he accepted his loss. "We represent modernity forged from below".

If victorious, Lopez Obrador faces a tougher security situation than did Pena Nieto.

Trump - who during his presidential campaign charged that some Mexican immigrants were "criminals" and "rapists" - early in his presidency ordered the building of a wall along the 2,000-mile (3,200-kilometer) US-Mexico border.

She was among the first politicians to leave Mexico's established left-wing party, the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), and join Lopez Obrador's breakaway, Morena, when he formally launched it in 2014. "That's why I tell Mexicans today the result's information we have now favors Andres Manuel", said Anaya.

It is the first time in Mexico's modern history a candidate has won more than half the vote in a competitive election, and a resounding rejection of the two parties that have governed the country for almost a century.

His commanding poll lead this time around has led analysts to question how deep-rooted the support really is. "Lopez Obrador will be pragmatic. but he's not going to bend over backwards to have a good relationship".
