Man who challenged black mom's right to be at pool loses job

North Carolina man accused of racial profiling no longer employed after incident at community pool Man who challenged black mom's right to be at pool loses job

The man, who is identified only as "Adam" in the video, called the police on a black woman who gave him her address.

Jasmine Edwards posted a video of her arguing with Adam Bloom, who demanded she show identification before entering the pool in their Winston-Salem neighborhood. Police also had Edwards demonstrate that her key card worked at the entry gate.

A few hours later, she posted the video on her Facebook account and it went viral.

The video comes about a week after a white woman was accused of attacking a black teenager at a SC pool, after telling him he and his friends "did not belong and they had to leave".

Jasmine Edwards filmed the weird incident at a private pool in Winston-Salem.

Mr Bloom's employer, the packing company Sonoco, said on Friday it had fired him over the "terrible incident".

The victim, Jasmine Edwards, said it was a classic case of racial profiling. Edwards tells the officer that only a keycard is needed, which she possesses, arguing that she wouldn't have been able to enter the premises with a baby in her hand if she didn't have a keycard in the first place.

The Glenridge Homeowners Association said Thursday afternoon that Bloom resigned as the pool's chairman and association board member. "But that's good enough for me today", the man can be heard saying after her pool card grants her access to the facility.

Edwards told officers that Bloom only approached her and asked for ID.

'Do you have your keycard?' the cop asks.

WXII reported that Bloom did not respond to its requests for comment. Spokesman Brian Risinger confirmed that the statement was referring to Bloom.

Ms Edwards then asks Mr Bloom if he will apologise, but he does not and walks away.

The video has been viewed more than 125,000 times online.

"We are aware of a awful incident involving the actions of one [of] our employees outside of the workplace".

"It doesn't say she has to show an ID anywhere", a witness said. In a Twitter post, South Carolina-based Sonoco apologized to Edwards and said the situation doesn't reflect company values. As the pool's chairman, it was Bloom's job to check the members' credentials to verify their membership, Vermitsky told the newspaper.

"We sincerely regret that an incident occurred yesterday at our community pool that left neighbors feeling racially profiled", the association's statement said. "In confronting and calling the police on one of our neighbors, the pool chair escalated a situation in a way that does not reflect the inclusive values Glenridge seeks to uphold".

The HOA also announced that it has re-instituted a sign-in sheet at the pool "to make sure no resident feels singled out again". Lawyer John Vermitsky said his client called police to "make sure that the interaction didn't escalate", and said it's "unfortunate that conclusions are being reached by people who have seen a 46-second video of their interaction".
