"Vibrio is a bacteria and it lives in saltwater, or brackish water, so any water that has salt in it and it's there essentially all of the time", Said Michael Drennon, who is the Disease Intervention Services Program Manager for Florida Department of Health Sarasota County.
The department's website says it is the third fatal case of Vibrio in Florida this year.
Vibrio is sometimes referred to as a flesh-eating bacteria because of skin lesions that can spread in the body if the infection enters the bloodstream, but officials say the term is a misnomer.
Healthy individuals develop mild disease from the infection but the infection can become more serious and even deadly in people with compromised immune systems, particularly those with a chronic liver disease. The county did not have any vibrio cases past year but there were confirmed cases and one death in 2016.
Oysters, clams, and mussels need to be cooked thoroughly since infection may be contracted through consumption of undercooked shellfish.
Those affected should confer with a doctor if any of these symptoms occur soon after eating raw shellfish or entering the water with open wounds.
Another way of contracting the illness is from going into salt water with an open wound. There were three confirmed cases and one death in 2016.
So far, Hillsborough County has had a single case that resulted in death.
As for Big Bend counties, Wakulla and Jackson counties have both had one confirmed case each. In 2017, there were two cases and also no fatalities.
