A U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded in an "apparent insider attack" in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, NATO said.

The Nato combat mission in Afghanistan officially ended in 2014, however, a number of countries, including the U.S., still have troops on the ground, helping support the Afghan military. It added that the name of the deceased service member was being withheld until next of kin is notified.

A USA military service member was killed and two others were wounded Saturday in an apparent insider attack in southern Afghanistan.

Additional information will be released as appropriate, the Resolute Support said.

Saturday's incident comes just over a year after three United States soldiers were killed by an Afghan soldier in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

An insider attack would indicate one carried out by a member of the Afghan security forces.

To date this year, three other troops have been killed in hostile incidents in Afghanistan.

As in other areas of the war, Afghan units suffer more heavily than coalition units from insider attacks.

Insider attacks on Afghan forces - and deaths resulting from those attacks - have increased by more than 50 percent compared to the same time frame a year ago.

Since U.S. involvement in Afghanistan began in October 2001, 1,876 U.S. military personnel have been killed in action and 20,385 have been wounded in action, as of May 31.
