Hurricane Beryl was moving westward Friday morning as it was over 1100 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands, according to the 5 am EDT advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

However, "due to its very small size, there is greater-than-usual uncertainty in the analysis of Beryl's current intensity" and "rapid changes in intensity, both up and down, that are hard to predict are possible during the next couple days", the National Hurricane Center warns. Beryl is on a steady path heading west at 15 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds recorded at 80 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory on Friday.

"If this trend continues, then Beryl may be downgraded to a tropical storm later this morning".

Maximum sustained winds were 75 miles per hour or 120 kilometres per hour.

Beryl was a compact storm, with hurricane force winds extending out about 10 miles (20 kilometers) from its center.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two systems in the Atlantic.

Spaghetti models show various different paths for Hurricane Beryl, but most take the storm right over Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria back in September.

It dumped heavy rain on the U.S. It's unclear whether remnants of Beryl will reach the U.S.

Forecasters said Beryl would weaken further after entering the Caribbean late Sunday or early Monday.

Meantime, forecasters are also keeping an eye on a weather system off the coast of North Carolina that could turn into a tropical depression over the weekend.

"Residents in Dominica are advised to monitor the system as some strengthening is expected and a Hurricane Watch could be issued for the island later today".

Meteorologist Odalys Martinez said in a phone interview that conditions would deteriorate late Sunday, with up to 3 inches (7.62 centimetres) of rain possible.

In a press briefing on Thursday, Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, said that, despite the storm's expected weakening, Beryl remains "a danger due to the vulnerable condition of Puerto Rico".

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed that a storm named Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2018 season.

According to the NOAA, Beryl is now 1,140 miles off the coast of the Lesser Antilles.
