Top-seeded Simona Halep was derailed by unseeded Su-Wei Hsieh 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday, leaving No. 7 Karolina Pliskova as the only top-10 seed standing entering the second week of play at the Grand Slam event - the fewest in a Grand Slam event in the Open era.

Halep is the first No. 1 seed to fail to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon since Serena Williams in 2014.

Halep, who ended her wait for a major title last month at the French Open, won the first set, had the chance to serve out for the victory and earned match point on her opponent's serve.

When Halep led 4-1 and 5-2 in the final set it looked as though she would live to fight another day but Hsieh broke back and repeated the trick at 5-5 when she landed a sweetly-timed backhand into the corner and Halep could only net.

"This is the first time I have beaten the world number one, it is wonderful", the world number 48, who made her Wimbledon debut in 2006, said.
