As Theresa May's government continues to reel over its divisive plan to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union, the Prime Minister has rejected the idea of a second vote that would give the British people another say before the country officially hits the exits in March 2019.

But the government, which says a customs union would stop it striking new trade deals, won by 307 to 301.

Eurosceptics will have a chance to show their strength in the House of Commons later Monday by voting on amendments to a bill setting up May's new customs regime after Brexit.

May added amendments that have been controversial, as the British government initially opposed them, but reversed course.

However, critics said May had caved in to pressure from Brexit supporters who want a complete break with Europe.

But the climbdown, a hasty decision mid-afternoon - which smacked of panic - to accept four amendments to the Bill from Mr Rees-Mogg's European Research Group, nearly backfired spectacularly.

Theresa May came within six votes of the possible collapse of her government as MPs narrowly rejected an amendment to trade legislation that could have forced the United Kingdom to stay in the EU customs union.

The rebels included Guto Bebb, MP for the marginal seat of Aberconwy in North Wales and a junior defence minister, who dramatically resigned from his government job as he entered the No lobby with his fellow rebel MPs.

She said that would remove Britain's ability to have an independent trade policy and her government "will never stand for that".

US President Donald Trump, who visited Britain last week, told May that under whatever deal she comes to with Brussels, she must ensure Britain is free to strike its own trade arrangements with the United States once it leaves the EU.

May, vulnerable in parliament after losing her party's majority at an ill-judged election previous year, has come under fire from both wings of her party over a hard-won Brexit plan, with one ex-minister calling it the "worst of all worlds". They fear the changes will make May's plan - which is only a starting point for the next phase of negotiations with the European Union - less acceptable to Brussels.

The prospect of continued drama in parliament and doubts over the future of May's "white paper" Brexit plan - which is only a starting point for talks with the European Union - is testing the patience of businesses that depend on cross-border trade.

The commission said the Vote Leave group, backed by senior politicians who included former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, failed to declare 675,000 pounds ($894,000) it spent with Canadian data firm Aggregate IQ.

They can hold their fire for Tuesday when the same amendment is tabled to a separate trade bill. There is also a move for Parliament to begin its summer recess several days early in a bid to curtail the chaos of recent weeks.
