Elon Musk on Tesla (and Himself): 'We Were Huge Idiots'

Tesla's US Tax Credit Set To Come To An End | OilPrice.com Tesla loses US subsidies as it hits 200,000 sales mark

Tesla opened the taps on Model 3 sales this week by dropping the exclusive reservations list it established a year ago, allowing anyone in the U.S.to order one of the small sedans with a $2,500 deposit. This was followed by an encouraging trend displayed by Bloomberg's Model 3 production tracker, which now forecasts that Tesla would be able to sustain its "burst" production rate of 5,000 vehicles per week for the next three weeks.

Other media outlets have reported that Musk has slept under his desk and on a couch at the Fremont plant this year as the company faced what Musk called "production hell" for the Model 3. According to the group, Tesla's recent filing - which numbers 6,032 new VINs that are estimated to be ~100% Dual Motor AWD - has brought the company's total number of Model 3 registrations to 69,601 units. Musk and his team made a big bet that automation would help Telsa make more cars in a single month than it ever had before, only to have robots repeatedly fail, forcing the company to halt the entire production process to fix the problem. But the company struggled to increase automation and production capacity at the same time after launching its Model 3 sedan.

Musk also told Bloomberg that at one point he wore the same clothes for five consecutive days.

Musk has previously said that Tesla tried to automate tasks that were better suited to humans and that the company struggled with production bottlenecks caused by machines that didn't work as expected and had to be replaced by humans.

"We thought it would be good, but it was not good".

Tesla has struggled to ramp up production for the Model 3, which it launched in July of previous year.

Tesla has delivered 200,000 vehicles in the United States, exceeding the threshold above which federal tax credits for EVs start to phase out, a spokesperson for Tesla said on Thursday-and its website has updated its incentives schedule.

The Model S sedan and Model X sport-utility vehicle can each cost more than $100,000.

The company twice missed its self-imposed deadline to produce 5,000 Model 3s in a week, though it hit that rate at the end of June.
