The report claims that Spotify also has in excess of 20 million paying customers in the USA, but Apple is now in the lead.

Spotify still has a significantly larger subscriber base worldwide than Apple Music, but it's worth keeping in mind that Spotify is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year.
Apple Music overtaking Spotify is a significant achievement, but it was not at all surprising.
For years, Spotify has been the number one service for paid subscribers who choose to listen to music that they pick themselves.
A defeat in the United States isn't the death knell of the service but it does mean Spotify has to work harder to remain competitive, lest it become the next Pandora.
