Amid jubilation, 4 more boys rescued from flooded Thai cave
Second day of Thailand cave rescue
11 July, 2018, 08:10
"The mission has resumed", a government official closely involved in the mission told Reuters, declining to be identified.
Rescue workers dived deep inside a flooded Thai cave for a second straight day on Monday in a treacherous bid to save a trapped group of young footballers, with the mission chief promising more "good news" after four of the 13 were saved.
Eight people remain trapped in the cave.
Ben Tracy reports from Chiang Rai.
Extracting everyone from the cave could take up four days, but Sunday's success raised hopes that could be done. Having completed this section, the boys are then handed over to separate, specialist rescue teams, who help assist them through the remainder of the cave, much of which they can wade through.
The boys are said to be generally in good health but doctors are still evaluating whether they could have picked up any risky infections, such as the potentially lethal leptospirosis, while inside the damp cave for two weeks.
Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit are the main team guiding the boys to safety through narrow, submerged passageways that claimed the life of a former Thai navy diver on Friday.
That brought the total number of boys rescued to five.
Narongsak Osotthanakorn said the boy's rescue involved numerous same divers who brought the four boys out Sunday.
An ambulance with flashing lights left the site just hours after the second phase of the perilous rescue operation was launched on Monday. There was no word on the condition of the fifth boy brought out earlier on Monday.
Thai authorities revealed that the first phase was executed "smoothly" and the boys who had been evacuated were in "good health".
However, rumours have rated that he has apparently been giving his food to the boys to keep them healthy, if this turns out to be true he may be rescued sooner rather than later.
Pad kra pao, a Thai chicken dish, was said to be the first meal that the four boys asked for.
The four who were rescued previously were taken to a hospital in Chiang Rai for evaluation.
Somboon Sompiangjai, 38, the father of one of the trapped boys, said parents were told by rescuers ahead of Sunday's operation the "strongest children" would be brought out first.
"We've used all the oxygen", Osatanakorn told reporters.
As for the boys who have been rescued, they are in isolation and being monitored at a hospital for infection.
"I'm hoping for good news today", he said.
Soldiers arrive outside the Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 8, 2018. The sixth and seventh were loaded onto ambulances at 7:11pm. Soldiers, medics, engineers and volunteers in yellow shirts milled around but the mood was relaxed.
The most touching note came from one whose name was not clear: "I'm doing fine, but the air is a little cold, but don't worry. And we have more expertise than yesterday", he said. One was that it was unknown how safe and dry the area where they had taken shelter would stay as Thailand's rainy season, which lasts until at least late October, picks up pace.
