A heatwave in Quebec has killed at least 19 people in the past week as high summer temperatures scorched eastern Canada, health officials said Wednesday.

Most of the victims in Montreal were men in their 50s or older, and living in vulnerable conditions without air conditioning, regional public health director Mylene Drouin has said.

Environment Canada forecast a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) on Thursday with a heat index (what the temperature feels like to the human body) of up to 45 Celsius.

None of the victims had air conditioning, and Kaiser said majority died inside of their homes. "Heat risk in an urban setting is a combination of medical, social and environmental exposures". Signs of heat illness could include cramps and rashes, and among the people with the highest risk of suffering are generally older adults, young children, the homeless and people with chronic illnesses.

Environment Canada has lifted heat warnings for the affected regions, including Quebec, for the next several days.

There are also micro heat islands throughout the city, particularly in some of the poorer areas, he added.

The remaining 16 deaths occurred in other parts of the French-speaking province. However, he said public health officials believe the death toll may rise depending on how people adjust after such extreme temperatures.

In the canadian province of Quebec the number of deaths from heat was increased to 50 people.
