CDC researchers analyzed the food or beverages employees bought at work from vending machines or cafeterias or got for free from common areas, at meetings or workplace social functions.

According to this new survey, about one-quarter of American worker bees eat almost 1,300 calories at work per week and many of those calories are rich in fat and sugar.

"Our results suggest that the foods people get from work do not align well with the recommendations in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans", he said in his statement. Overall, 35, 20, 12, 11, 12, and 10 percent of those who obtained food at work had one, two, three, four, five, and more than five acquisition occasions, respectively. And how much calories are they exactly consuming? It tend to contain high amount of sodium and refined grains, calories and very little whole grains and fruit, leading to unhealthy eating putting you at risk of various disease including cancer, researchers warn.

A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds a lot of food available in the workplace isn't healthy.

The study surveyed 5,222 employees across the USA, asking what foods they got from their workplace during a seven-day period.

"Nearly one in four working adults obtained food at work during the week, and the food and beverages that they got added up to an average of almost 1,300 calories, more than half the recommended daily calorie intake for the average adult", lead author Stephen Onufrak, an epidemiologist in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told ABC News.

The study suggested ways for workplaces to promote access to healthier foods, noting that changing employees' health behaviors has the potential to reduce both sick days and health care costs for companies -- added motivations to the public health concerns.

It's so hard to pass up the pastries at the early morning meeting, the birthday cake for a teammate, the doughnuts in the break room, and many of us just aren't.

Findings from the new research were presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting during Nutrition 2018 held in Boston on June 11. In addition, employers could regulate foods in cafeterias or vending machines, supplying only those that follow nutritional guidelines.

Onufrak said, "We have salad, French fries, and pizza ... among that list, there weren't a lot of nutrient-dense foods".

According to the researchers, employers could help their employees eat better at work by using worksite wellness programs to promote healthy options that are also appealing.
