White House says Trump supports both House immigration bills, after all

President Donald Trump said Friday that he would oppose a compromise immigration bill cobbled together by House Republicans - dealing a significant blow to GOP leaders who have scrambled to rally support for the bill.

Trump tells reporters that he's looking at both plans.

Leaders were negotiating two versions: a conservative proposal crafted by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and backed by members on the right of the GOP conference, and a bill negotiated by top House Republicans leaders that attempts to bridge the divide between conservatives and centrists.

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters at the White House, Friday, June 15, 2018, in Washington.

The president's statement will nearly certainly doom the bill, which Ryan and other GOP leaders have been working on for weeks.

On Thursday, Ryan said that with the compromise bill, the House was "bringing legislation to the floor that, if it passed all the way through the process, would make law". The White House later walked back the comments, formally endorsing the measure and saying Trump had been confused.

Well, sometimes we all misspeak, and it seems President Trump did so on immigration, much to the chagrin of House conservatives.

House GOP leaders have been working for weeks on legislation aimed at meeting the so-called four pillars of Trump's policy demands on any bill to provide a path to legal status to people brought to the U.S.as children. "And law requires that children who can not be with their parents be placed within the custody of HHS within 72 hours, something entirely different than the criminal justice system". The compromise bill also ends two chain migration categories, shuffles some of the visas to the employment-based category.

"Until we know exactly where he's (Trump) at and his concerns have been satisfied, I think things will be on hold", said veteran Republican Representative Tom Cole.

"I need a bill that gives this country tremendous border security", the president said on "Fox and Friends". "I have to have that".

"It sounds like they were going to take a vote on a couple of different bills on immigration probably next week". Many House Republicans said Friday that Trump's comments undercut any effort to get a bill passed. Some focused on the failure of the bill to limit the ability of adult USA citizens to apply for green cards for their parents.

"This bill is an amnesty for the parents of DACAs as well", said Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, which supports restricting immigration. Republicans in the Senate said Thursday said they may seek separate legislation to end the practice.
