Supporters of Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gather in front of the Huber Presidential Palace where he delivered a victory speech.

But Sunday's twin elections, for both president and parliament, represent the greatest challenge Erdoğan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have faced since rising to power 16 years ago.

Turkey's strongman leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan has secured another term as the country's president after winning a majority of votes in Sunday's presidential election, according to the state news Andalou Agency.

In a tweet, he said only 37 per cent of ballot boxes had actually been counted, as opposed to the more than almost 90 per cent the state-run agency Anadolu was reporting.

The turnout was high at around 87 percent for both contests, with more than 59 million votes running to the polls.

Speaking early on Monday, the head of the Supreme Election Council, Sadi Guven, said unofficial results showed five parties had passed the 10% election threshold required to enter parliament. The post of the prime minister will be abolished, and its powers transferred to Erdogan, who will also have the ability to appoint senior judges, ministers and vice presidents, giving him full control of those who are supposed to check his authority.

"The opposition will not be a nuisance anymore with the new presidential system", said another Erdogan supporter, retired sailor Engin Ozmen, 60. Erdogan called the election more than a year early in what analysts say was a pre-emptive move ahead of a possible economic downturn.

"It's time for change", said Aynur, 40, an architect who cast her vote at a polling station near Istanbul's central Taksim Square.

Erdogan, according to the agency, stressed Turkey's "continued support" to the Palestinian people and "their just cause and their right to freedom and stability".

Russian President Vladimir Putin was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Mr Erdogan on his win, sending a congratulatory telegram. In a milestone, a pro-Kurdish group, HDP, gained the 10 percent of the vote needed for representation in Parliament. The current prime minister, Binali Yildirim, said he expects he'll be appointed vice president.

He added that the alliance led by the AKP had won the majority in parliament.

"The results show that the AK Party-MHP alliance will have to continue for Erdogan to carry out his executive presidency comfortably", he said.

In Sunday's parliamentary contest, the Islamist-rooted AK Party won 43 per cent and its MHP ally 11 per cent, based on 98 per cent of votes counted, broadcasters said.

The main opposition CHP will have 146 seats, the pro-Kurdish HDP 67 and the breakaway nationalist Iyi Party 44. If the results are confirmed, he would gain broad new powers under the country's new constitution, on top of his already considerable authority.

The CHP said it had recorded violations in particular in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa.

He brought forward the elections from November 2019, but he reckoned without Ince, a former physics teacher and veteran CHP lawmaker, whose feisty performance at campaign rallies has galvanized Turkey's long-demoralized and divided opposition.

Addressing thousands of supporters in Ankara, he said: "We will fight even more with the strength you provided us with this election". A state of emergency imposed after the coup remains in place.

Before the start of the news conference, Ince asked a crew from Turkey's state television TRT to leave the hall, criticizing the publicly-funded organization for ignoring the opposition's campaign rallies and not allowing other candidates equal airtime to Erdogan during the race.
